COURSE OVERVIEW
Social work is the helping profession. The primary mission of the social work profession is to enhance human well-being and help meet basic and complex needs of all people, with a particular focus on those who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty. If you’re looking for a career with meaning, action, diversity, satisfaction, and a variety of options, consider social work.
Social work is different from other professions, because of focus both on the person and their environment. Social
workers deal with the external factors that impact a person’s situation and outlook. And we create opportunities for
assessment and intervention, to help clients and communities cope effectively with their reality and change that reality when necessary. Social workers help clients deal not only with how they feel about a situation but also with what they can do about it. In thousands of ways, social workers help people of every age and background.
OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE
The general objective for this program is to prepare technician social workers, who can engage in attending problems
facing individuals, families and small groups; hence enhancing their capacities to address their socio-economic needs
and problems.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE
- To enable students to acquire intermediate social work knowledge and skills in order to understand clients’ problem situations.
- To prepare students who will be able to use social work practice methods to attend clients with diverse problems.
- To enable students relate theoretical knowledge and practical work situations
THE PROGRAMME PHILOSOPHY
The curriculum of the Certificate and Diploma in Social work is based upon the framework provided by Technical Education standards as provided by the National Council for Technical Education (NACTE). The program is focused towards preparing intermediate social work professionals with academic knowledge and skills to address social needs and problems of the clients in the changing communities. Thus, the philosophy of developing this programme is anchored on five core values namely: innovativeness, creativity, flexibility, competence and responsiveness to new professional demands. Therefore, the program is governed by the following principles:-
- Identify as a professional social worker and conduct one accordingly.
- Apply social work ethical principles to guide professional practice.
- Apply critical thinking to inform and communicate professional judgment.
- Engage in diversity and difference in practice
- Advance human rights and social and economic justice.
- Engage in research-informed practice and practice-informed research.
- Apply knowledge of human behavior and the social environment.
- Engage in policy practice to advance to social and economic well-being and to deliver effective social work services.
- Respond to contexts that shape practice.
- Engage, assess, intervene, and evaluate with individuals, groups, organization, and communities.
EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES
- Social workers are employed in hospitals, helping people cope with acute conditions and chronic illness.
- They provide therapy and community health centers and help prevent students from dropping out of school.
- They help prisoners as they re-enter communities and provide rehabilitative support in drug and alcohol centers.
- They provide outreach and long-term care in nursing homes and homeless shelters. Social workers are clinical therapists to members of the military and veterans.
- And Social Workers are first responders during natural disasters.

WHO CAN APPLY
Any form for graduate with minimum passes of “D” grades in four (4) subjects can apply for this programme. The
programme also accept graduates of VETA with relevant or similar program to join at level 4. The program specifically welcomes and accept graduates of Community Health and other related programmes to join the
NTA Level 5 as precursor for eventual Diploma qualification. The Social Work program accept students transferring from other institutions so long as they requisite passes and their former institutions are recognized by the Council (NACTE).
