COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course provides an introduction to counselling interviewing skills. The topics covered include the helping relationship, the helping process and the communication skills required in the therapeutic dialogue. This qualification develops your knowledge and skills working with individuals in a variety of contexts and helping roles. It reflects the role of counsellors, who work with clients on personal and psychological  issues  using  established  counselling  modalities.  They  use  communication,  micro‐counselling  and  interviewing  skills  and  draw  on  varied  counselling  therapies  to  assist  clients.

The  Certificate  in  Counselling  programme  is  designed  to  develop  the  basic  support  skills  and  knowledge to people who are interested in developing professional counselling skills. Students will develop knowledge and practical skills in counselling, mental health, and personal development. This training helps them to perform more effectively as helpers in a variety of caring roles as well as preparing them to pursue further training in counselling and psychotherapy.

It is suitable for people working in many diverse front-facing, support, or interpersonal contexts. Examples include administration, childcare, community work, social work, education, frontline roles, healthcare, hospitality, management, media, nursing, pastoral roles, health and beauty industry, caring work, and sport. The programme enhances the provision of care by developing practitioner skills and knowledge in counselling and mental health, and by deepening practitioner self-awareness and reflectiveness.

FIELD ATTACHMENT

Being a professional course, Industrial Training is also included as a part of the curriculum. Field attachment is a field-based practical training experience that prepares trainees for the tasks they are expected to perform on completion of their training. The objective of the Field Attachment is to enrich students’ theoretical and practical understandings through firsthand experience. It provides an opportunity to students to learn by observing, participating and doing and it allows for contextualized and integrated learning based on direct interaction with ground realities. It also produces practically oriented graduates that meet the required job-related competences of their future employers.  A minimum of ninety days industrial training in a reputed organisation has to be undergone by every student before the completion of course. The training has to be given under the supervision and guidance of the organisation supervisor. Each student will have to maintain a daily logbook and enter the observations and get it countersigned by the organisation supervisor. At the end of the Training, the student will have to submit a comprehensive Training Report undergone by him/her at the organisation.

ASSESSMENT & CERTIFICATION

Upon successful completion of the course assessments and obtain a combined final mark of 50% or more for the assignments and final exam through formative and summative assessment and in-person practical training, students will receive the TACOA Certification on Counselling Programme. Learners will also receive a course transcript with grades upon completion of their course.
